Welcome back after the three day weekend!  I am pleased that some of you are beginning to really use moodle and are now posting.  I think we had a great time last week learning about two of our Canadian heroes, Rick Hansen and Terry Fox.  Here is a clip from Steve Nash's movie about Terry. Please note some of the links at the side of this blog.  You can even work on your French!

14 Cows for America

I think we all enjoyed reading this book today.  To learn more just go to this website-there is so much information!!!  For instance I found out that the American Embassy was so touched by the gift of the cows that they sponsored 14 scholarships enabling Maasai teens to attend high school and that is not always easy for such students.  I love how the giving really didn't end but gave back and continues.

Our class last year did so many exciting projects to help students in different parts of the world from Nepal to Uganda to India.  I look forward to you having the chance to be involved this year through our class and its activities, and through our Me to We club.  You also can join Students' Council.  And by becoming a Peer Helper you get to help right in our school as well.

The rise and fall of the Twin Towers

Here are some great photographs of the rise and fall of the Twin Towers that were destroyed by the planes crashing into them on 911.  Pick one and write the caption and tell why you chose this picture and  write about this in your project book.

More on 911

I am a big fan of Brain Pop, an application I discovered on Ipads this summer but this is an excellent explanation of what happened September 11, 2001.  Please watch this video and take the quiz as well.

New Blog Will Go Up Soon!

I think I will finish up my summer trip vacation here and then there will be a new blog for a new year at Trudeau Elementary.  Stay tuned.  I hope all of Division One is enjoying being Grade Eight students.  Today is the day that the current Trudeau students move to their new classes.  I have been teaching Grade One for the last couple of days! Here are a few pictures of them hard at work!! Just think they'll be in grade seven in seven years!!!

911 Anniversary

I am going to take a break from my trip description to take a moment to talk about the anniversary of 911.  This is a time when you were too young to know what was going on but this is a day that has affected all of us.

I heard this program yesterday when I was driving to school.  It is the description of what it was like for a girl who was in Grade Seven at the time, living in New York City.  Please listen to her story

I will always remember that day.  My clock radio woke me up and I thought something strange was going on because it wasn't CBC but WNBC from New York City broadcasting.  Then I heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Centre.  I rushed to the TV set and watched the second plane hit the tower.  I couldn't believe it.
I was teaching at Moberly at the time and our classroom was on the third floor and we could watch all the planes being diverted into the airport because no international flights were landing in the USA.

For a list of events that day just hit this link and watch this video.
An excellent novel about this day is We All Fall Down by Eric Walters.  Here is the book trailer.
The picture was taken at the site of the World Trade Tower.  I have visited the site twice-so hard to believe this happened.  We have been fortunate in North America as we have not been affected by war to the extent that so much of the world has been so this day was probably even more shocking to us.  The good part is ten years later the world is still here and many good things do happen but this was a day that definitely changed history...

New Brunswick and dramatic tides

I am a bit behind with this!  We crossed into New Brunswick from Maine at St. Stephen's.  First we visited Alma where it was definitely low tide.  Our next stop on our holiday was at Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick.  You should check out that link I just gave you-it's excellent.  Before we got there though we visited an interesting lighthouse with a spectacular view.  You could go ziplining there but I didn't!

Here is what Hopewell Rocks looks like a low tide but in high tide you can go kayaking where we were walking.  The tide comes in really quickly when it does come in.

Here's what it looked out in less than an hour after we left.  Stay tuned for my journey into Nova Scotia!
