Me To We Assembly

It was very exciting to see the presentation of the cheque for 8500 dollars to a representative of the Free the Children organization at the special Me to We Assembly today.  All the emcees did an excellent job and of course, we loved  Sadie's prezi! This event was written up in the Vancouver Courier and you can read the whole history of Me to We as well on Jane's blog.

Alicia Doo did a great job representing the Free the Children organization and explaining to everyone in the school about how the organization works.

It was a nice touch to end with the whole school singing Hearts Around the World because we all feel a a part of this great project.

Apple Store Visit

I really liked Jane's image of our class at the Apple Store.  I sent it to them.  Notice the distinctive yellow shirts.

Salt anyone?

As promised, here are some more prezis from your classmates.  This is one on Salt by Van.  We have a great book in the classroom as well on the history and importance of salt, The Story of Salt by Mark Kurlansky.

Author Visit with Norma Charles and James Heneghen

I was doing poetry with Ms. Clark's class so that  I missed most of your visit with Norma Charles and James Heneghen but I know you really enjoyed it.  Thanks to Ms. Wong for arranging this.  Seeing how eager you are reading their books, I know they were a hit!  If you would like to visit Norma's website here is the link.  Here is the link for James Heneghen.
Speaking of poetry, I have to thank you for the great job you do as buddies.  I know you all enjoyed our session doing note taking on animals with Ms. Micozzi's students.  Next step is we will be moving into making poems with our notes.  I think writing with you really inspires them.
As you left yesterday, I asked you to each tell a positive you had yesterday.  So here are a few positives about you (you often seem to hear some negatives).  You are helpful, enthusiastic, generally cheerful and upbeat, terrific researchers, happy readers, good fundraisers for worthy causes, and good sports!  Enjoy the long weekend!!!

Division One goes to the Apple Store

I thought I should post some pictures from our visit to the Apple Store.  I think we all enjoyed our trip.  It was fun doing yearbook pages.  I have a feeling one of the most fun parts was using Photo Booth to take pictures.  Even though I have a Mac Pro I learned some things while I was there.

I kind of liked those yellow t-shirts they gave you.  It was easy to find you!!!  And I definitely should have taken a picture of you with your moose antler quiet signal.
The staff were so helpful and you guys are such technological whizzes of course.
Eating at the food court was fun as well.  Also it's great that we could have a ride on the Canada Line.  Izaac, of course, said that was the best part!

Here's a picture of you at the Marine Station waiting for the Main Street bus.

Trying something new

Sadie just sent me the link to her prezi on tree frogs so I hope it's okay that I share it for you.  Wouldn't it be great if everyone in the class could do a prezi by the end of the year.  Let's see if I can find a tree frog here.
As you can see I succeeded.  Now maybe if you watch the prezi you can even find out what kind it is!

We had a good Professional Development Day at school.  We looked at our school goals and in the afternoon, we looked at some neat easy forms of technology that I have just been playing with but I, personally, think maybe keeping track of Moodle and my blogger blogs is enough for me!  You could also try setting up your own website for projects or maybe a blog.  My new goal is to get a wireless router in the classroom.  Maybe even tomorrow!
I am looking forward to our trip to the Apple Store tomorrow.  It would be nice if it wasn't raining, wouldn't it???

Ancient Rome Presentations and helping Ms. Ng's class publish poetry

Well I am getting caught up here.  Your Rome projects turned out well and once again, we all learned lots about Ancient Rome.  I was also very impressed once again by your use of technology.  Everyone is learning more and I was very impressed particularly with the prezis.  You really know how to navigate around the internet.  I also like how you are learning to make your powerpoints, glogsters, etc. really part of the presentations.

I also thought you did a really good job sharing with the other classes on Friday.  Other classes are getting to see what they can do with technology.

I think Ms. Ng's class really enjoyed working with you to do the publishing of their animal poems.   I know some of the other teachers are hoping you will help their classes.  It's going to be great fun when we have our Writers' Festival in June.

Some of you went off to JO Friday afternoon for the orientation.  You were so independent I don't think I really needed to be there!  Next big event is our trip to the Apple Store on Thursday!

Granville Island

And yes, we went on a field trip.  It was a busy time at Granville Island.  First the play, Pharaoh Serket and Lost Stone of Fire was great fun, especially since you are such experts on Egypt.  Then having lunch at Granville Island is always fun and most of you really enjoyed the scavenger hunt!

Most of you cleverly used the map to find out where you could find silkworms but I don't think anyone actually made it into the store.  Apparently this isn't actually silkworm season!
It was supposed to be rain but we were lucky and we even saw blue sky.
Granville Island is one of my favorite places but it's much more pleasant if it isn't raining!
Here's a picture of Ms. Diesvelt and the leather work that her dad did that is displayed in the Circle Craft store.  No wonder Ms. Diesvelt is so talented!

Other than the ingestion of a bit too much candy the trip was a great success!

Catching up-hip hop, Science, French!

Well let's see... I think that you really really enjoyed the hip hop experience.  It was difficult taking pictures because everyone was moving so fast.  It was amazing that the whole school were able to practice with only one practice a day for six days.  I thought you made quite convincing zombies (kidding...)

Well I think we had quite a bit of fun with chemistry.  Heating and not burning could of course be a bit of a challenge!  And of course our scales leave a bit to be desired but you had fun with density and volume!

Then there was French!  This picture seems to indicate you were having a good time.  Well at least someone was having a good time!

JO orientation

Only students who are not registered at another school will attend the orientation Friday afternoon.  Otherwise normal school afternoon!
